GUJARAT Chief Minister Vijay Rupani launches School Safety Week from June 27 to July 1

Ahmedabad, June 27 – Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today stressed on the need to prepare the next generation for converting challenges caused by natural calamities into opportunities.

Addressing collectors, school principals, teachers and students of the state through BISEG Satellite to launch the ‘School Safety Week’ from June 27 to July 1 across the state, he said proper preparedness causes least casualty. It has been noticed that children and senior citizens suffer the most, hence this drill at schools. The memory of killer earthquake on January 26, 2001 taking the toll of unsuspecting children out on a Republic Day rally at Anjar in Kutch district is still fresh in the memory of those who had experienced it.

Mr. Rupani said that Gujarat has been prone to natural calamities like earthquake, flood, cyclone and fire. It was due to the farsightedness of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat that he took initiative to set up the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). Subsequently, GSDMA has undertaken Training of Trainers (TOT) programme to train teachers, students and even parents to be fighting fit in case of any calamity. He thanked the authorities for arranging this awareness week.

Disaster Management Minister Dilipkumar Thakor said that 257 master trainers have been trained this year under TOT, one for each taluka, who have so far trained 52,206 teachers in 33,733 schools in the state.

Those present on the occasion included Chief Secretary J.N. Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Sangita Singh, Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary S. Aparna, Principal Secretary Revenue Pankaj Kumar, GSDMA P.K. Taneja and CEO Anuradha Mall.
